“We’re going to raise traders just like they raise turtles in Singapore.”

So trading guru Richard Dennis reportedly said to his long-time friend William Eckhardt nearly 25 years ago. What started as a bet about whether great traders were born or made became a legendary trading experiment that, until now, has never been told in its entirety.

Way of the Turtle reveals, for the first time, the reasons for the success of the secretive trading system used by the group known as the “Turtles.” Top-earning Turtle Curtis Faith lays bare the entire experiment, explaining how it was possible for Dennis and Eckhardt to recruit 23 ordinary people from all walks of life and train them to be extraordinary traders in just two weeks.

Only nineteen years old at the time-the youngest Turtle by far-Faith traded the largest account, making more than $30 million in just over four years. He takes you behind the scenes of the Turtle selection process and behind closed doors where the Turtles learned the lucrative trading strategies that enabled them to earn an average return of over 80 percent per year and profits of more than $100 million. You’ll discover

How the Turtles made money-the principles that guided their trading and the step-by-step methods they followed

Why, even though they used the same approach, some Turtles were more successful than others

How to look beyond the rules as the Turtles implemented them to find core strategies that work for any tradable market

How to apply the Turtle Way to your own trades-and in your own life

Ways to diversify your trading and limit your exposure to risk

Offering his unique perspective on the experience, Faith explains why the Turtle Way works in modern markets, and shares hard-earned wisdom on taking risks, choosing your own path, and learning from your mistakes.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars If you trade the market you MUST read this book
I won’t repeat what has already been said so well by the many reviewers who found incredible value in this book, as I have. I simply want to emphasise the importance of this book for its insight and valuable lessons into the psychology of trading.

I have been trading the markets now for about 6 months, and almost every day, I come back to this book in my mind and remember the lessons it taught me, including the SINGLE MOST VALUABLE FACT ABOUT TRADING: you will likely lose on MOST of your trades, yet this is essential to winning in the market!

It seems counterintuitive, especially if you have seen ads from the hypesters and hipsters who promise to give you tips that are “89% accurate” and so forth. Mr. Faith’s extensive work with testing trading systems using modern computerized simulation techniques virtually proves that you cannot successfully make money with systematic trading systems unless you get in the game, stay in the game, and follow the rules of the game. This means most of your trades will LOSE MONEY, but not very much money. The few times that you do actually realize a profit will more than make up for the many times you don’t, and that’s the key, right there!

There’s a lot more in this book, but for me, this is the biggest takeaway — how to manage your money and follow your system so you can amass a fortune even while losing on most of your trades! How liberating is THAT concept? It’s everything!

5 Stars Excellent book for understanding trading
Takes a long time to get to the meat, but I suppose it is a necessary developement of understanding the meat to have this outline. Will be reading a second time.

3 Stars Interesting account of the mysterious turtle technique
I first read about the turtles in Market Wizard and was excited when I saw this book. Well written book which covers what makes the author(a turtle) successful and also the turtle trading system.

2 Stars ITS JUST NOT GOOD - VERY WEAK
I was soooo excited to read this book. Here is a trading legend what wants to spill the beans on how he did it, right? WRONG. This book simply rehashed old trading ideas, some are very old, that have been done in other forums and books over the years. He plugged his own software so many times that the book read like an advertisement for his it.

I found it interesting that he did not reveal anything that was going on with his current trading. I’ve heard all of the stories of the Turtle days; show me what you have done since. Tell me about the big trends you hit in the 1990’s and earlier this decade. That would be fantastic - but he didn’t. It would have added substance to the book.

Instead the author tells you he hasn’t traded since the 1980s and has worked on other adventures. I find this hard to believe. How can the most successful trader of the Turtle class not trade? You have been given the gift of a wonderful education by Richard Dennis and you don’t use it? Come on - this is too much to believe. Certainly you have traded right?

It was disappointing to say the least. A book written for a publishing advance is my opinion. It could have been much better. The author could have included details on the behind the scenes. Faith had access to the most noted trader in Chicago. Talk about what he was like and what the office was like. Talk about trades you have made since the 1980s and talk about the profits you made for other customers - not just Dennis - since the experiment was over. This would make the book better.

Provide more details on what you did with the information and how it changed your life. What is what the title implies ‘Way of the Turtle’. The book is nothing more than a technical indicator book, something we have all done and seen many times before. I was very disappointed.

I struggled with giving one or two stars on this one. Part of me feels he deserves one star because the book was soooo bad. However, I posted two stars. He is a new author so I won’t penalize him for so many oversights on the first attempt. Call it grading on the curve.

5 Stars Great book on Trading
This book makes you think differently about trading stocks. It follows the approach of the Turtles, a straightforward and rigid method of systems trading. This is NOT a book about INVESTING in stocks but rather about short and medium term trading futures markets.

This book would be helpful for anyone interested in learning how to or in advancing their skill in day trading, technical analysis, and systems trading, with an emphasis on the psychological factors that affect performance. Five stars!

One of the most widely read books among active option traders around the world, Option Volatility & Pricing has been completely updated to reflect the most current developments and trends in option products and trading strategies.

Featuring:

Pricing models

Volatility considerations

Basic and advanced trading strategies

Risk management techniques

And more!

Written in a clear, easy-to-understand fashion, Option Volatility & Pricing points out the key concepts essential to successful trading. Drawing on his experience as a professional trader, author Sheldon Natenberg examines both the theory and reality of option trading. He presents the foundations of option theory explaining how this theory can be used to identify and exploit trading opportunities. Option Volatility & Pricing teaches you to use a wide variety of trading strategies and shows you how to select the strategy that best fits your view of market conditions and individual risk tolerance.

New sections include:

Expanded coverage of stock option

Strategies for stock index futures and options

A broader, more in-depth discussion volatility

Analysis of volatility skews

Intermarket spreading with options

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Required Reading But A Little Dry
I think this book is a must for those who’ve only ever covered Hull or Wilmott material (me at the point I read this). This book goes a step further and introduces you to practical information for someone who’s considering a career trading options (or working in an option trading environment like me).

The major weakness with the book is that at times it’s difficult to follow and the book is poorly set out (i.e. paragraphing and writing is too condensed on the page). A common theme throughout the book is that Natenberg will discuss the results from a graph or table in the middle of a page and to see the table/graph you have to turn the page. To make matters worse some of the tables have way too much information and/or are actually printed in landscape making it very cumbersome to view.

Despite its flaws it’s a must read for anyone looking to take it a step further from Hull and/or Wilmott. The best aspect of this book is that it gives you an insight into the relationship between the greeks as well as how certain parameters influence each of the greeks.

The book has a lot of Option Trading 101’s in it and is a good quick reference as you begin to learn about the wonderful world of options beyond the “risk-neutral” world.

5 Stars Extremely useful book.
I have read this book very quickly. Very easy, friendly and informative. A lot of useful information which can be applied practically.

5 Stars Must read for any options trader, beginner, intermediate or advanced. Must have in personal library.
One must keep in mind that book was written in early 1980s, and still one of the best works on options trading. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or seasoned options trader, it certainly worth reading; even the seasoned options trader will learn few things and certainly help organize your thoughts. I like this book and still refer to it every now and then in my trading activities.

2 Stars Not For The Beginner…
I bought this book based on all the high review ratings of so many other readers. Unfortunately I found this book to be disappointing. The author clearly knows what he is talking about but I feel does a poor job conveying the concepts to the reader. The basics of placing orders, commission structure, etc get glossed over and the author frequently mentions concepts and then states the will be discussed later in the book. This just needlessly muddies the waters. The presentation of numerical data is also poorly handled. The author describes in long-winded paragraphs concepts that could be more clearly illustrated in tables or graphs. At any rate I found the book disappointing and feel I have learned little about option investing. The book seems to be more of an academic study in options, not an investment oriented, “real world” way to profit from trading options. Someone with advanced knowledge can probably appreciate this but beginners and intermediates I think will find this book lacking.

5 Stars Very highly recommended
My favorite options trading text, bar none! I believe if you understand everything presented here you will have a huge leg up.

This book gave me the insight and confidence to take the other side of covered call writers’ positions and profitably trade the out-of-the-money calls from a purely volatility standpoint.

It also put me on the path of trading volatility around events like earnings releases and FOMC meetings. Read this before embarking on any options trading ventures. Even though you may not choose to trade volatility directly, understanding its dynamics in relation to option prices will be of huge benefit.
John J. Murphy has now updated his landmark bestseller Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, to include all of the financial markets.

“If one could read only one book on technical analysis, this should be the one.” –Knight-Ridder Financial Products and News (on the first edition, Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets, 0-13-898008-X)

This outstanding reference has already taught thousands of traders the concepts of technical analysis and their application in the futures and stock markets. Covering the latest developments in computer technology, technical tools, and indicators, the second edition features new material on candlestick charting, intermarket relationships, stocks and stock rotation, plus state-of-the-art examples and figures. From how to read charts to understanding indicators and the crucial role technical analysis plays in investing, readers gain a thorough and accessible overview of the field of technical analysis, with a special emphasis on futures markets. Revised and expanded for the demands of today’s financial world, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in tracking and analyzing market behavior.

“One way to get started in technical analysis is to read a good book on the subject. One of my favorites is Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets: A Comprehensive Guide to Trading Methods and Applications by John J. Murphy. It’s an easy read.” Ralph J. Acampora, CMT, Managing Director, Prudential Securities Inc.

2 Stars Extremely Shallow
The Good: May be worth something for a beginner who wants to know what Technical Analysis is about.

The Bad: No in depth view of anything.

My Advice: Go to the library before buying. In one or two hours you would have read all (if anything) that is worth in this self called “Bible”. No need to buy.

5 Stars From the Stock Traders Headquarters library
A must read. Technical Analysis is the heart and sole of my trading style, it doesn’t always work but it sure works enough of the time to make very profitable trades. If you trade on T/A, this book is a must.

good book, clear and thorough, amazon did a good job with the delivery too, it was sent earlier than the expected delivery date, and that is to Kuala Lumpur, MY

All I can say is wow, using the information I learned in this book lead me to take a short position in Heating Oil a few weeks ago and it worked beautifully. I still have much to learn particually about developing a trading system / style of my own. This book has given the confidence and a point in the right direction. Next up is statistical probabilty study.

3 Stars Murphy, Pro and Con
It is a text book, not a trader’s manual. On the upside it provides excellent coverage of charts, trends, reversal patterns, continuation patterns and moving averages. It’s chapter on Candlesticks is a small gem of information. The coverage of indicators was skimpy, but this gap can be filled with good internet sources.

On the downside, it was often unclear as to whether his writing applied to individual stocks or to stock markets only. The chapter on point and figure was incomprehensible. Money management was skimpy - again go to the Net.

4 Stars Great guide to economic indicators
This is an esaly introduction to economic indicators, mainly the american ones. It contains some interesting tips about indicators, like “thumb rules” in some cases. It briefly introduces each of the most important indicators to the US economy (as well to other major economies) and it’s effects on the markets. Those interested in detailed information of some indicator will need to go deeper looking for it’s original sources.

5 Stars Excellent Reference on Economic Indicators
This book does a great job of explaining a long list of macro-economic indicators, their application and relative predictive importance. Highly recommended for those who want to understand how economists measure and attempt to forecast the direction of economies around the world.

5 Stars Excellent book
Very good book to get an idea about all the economic indicators that can make or break the economy.

5 Stars How And Why The Markets Move
Secrets of Economic Indicators is an excellent book on what drives and affects the economy and the markets. From inflation, consumer spending, unemployment, housing, to the Federal Reserve. Each section explains market sensitivity and why. Would not recommend this book for market-timing necessarily but to understand why the markets go up and down. The last 2 chapter have websites for U.S. and International Economic Indicators for further information. Well done.

5 Stars First Class Economic Resource
If you’re an inspiring investor or seasoned pro; a corporate executive or fresh out of school Mr. Baumohl’s “The Secrets of Economic Indicators: Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities” holds a wealth of information to assist in making good economic decisions.

The book’s structure begins with two chapters that provides the reader with a good introduction on how economic indicators help explain the workings of the world economy. Next the various indicators are organized by categories that allows to reader to find the exact information he or she needs. Also, Mr. Baumohl’s writing style is accessible to readers without formal economic training.

This is the true story behind Wall Street legend Richard Dennis, his disciples, the Turtles, and the trading techniques that made them millionaires.

What happens when ordinary people are taught a system to make extraordinary money? Richard Dennis made a fortune on Wall Street by investing according to a few simple rules. Convinced that great trading was a skill that could be taught to anyone, he made a bet with his partner and ran a classified ad in the Wall Street Journal looking for novices to train. His recruits, later known as the Turtles, had anything but traditional Wall Street backgrounds; they included a professional blackjack player, a pianist, and a fantasy game designer. For two weeks, Dennis taught them his investment rules and philosophy, and set them loose to start trading, each with a million dollars of his money. By the time the experiment ended, Dennis had made a hundred million dollars from his Turtles and created one killer Wall Street legend.

In The Complete TurtleTrader, Michael W. Covel, bestselling author of Trend Following and managing editor of TurtleTrader.com, the leading website on the Turtles, tells their riveting story with the first ever on the record interviews with individual Turtles. He describes how Dennis interviewed and selected his students, details their education and experiences while working for him, and breaks down the Turtle system and rules in full. He reveals how they made astounding fortunes, and follows their lives from the original experiment to the present day. Some have grown even wealthier than ever, and include some of today’s top hedge fund managers. Equally important are those who passed along their approach to a second generation of Turtles, proving that the Turtles’ system truly is reproducible, and that anyone with the discipline and the desire to succeed can do as well as—or even better than—Wall Street’s top hedge fund wizards.

In an era full of slapdash investing advice and promises of hot stock tips for “the next big thing,” as popularized by pundits like Jim Cramer of Mad Money, the easy-to-follow objective rules of the TurtleTrader stand out as a sound guide for truly making the most out of your money. These rules worked—and still work today—for the Turtles, and any other investor with the desire and commitment to learn from one of the greatest investing stories of all time.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Nature vs. nurture
The book will be very interesting for readers who are new to trading literature and moderately interesting to those who have already read about trading, and trend trading in particular (I’ve read the author’s magnum opus “Trend Following” and recommend it strongly).

As to the guide motive of The Complete Turtle Trader I wasn’t convinced that “The Turtle experiment proved that nurture trumps nature” as the author states repeatedly. Why?

1/The Turtles were recruited not randomly but in a careful selection process. Clearly, they were perceived by R.Dennis as candidates having certain natural potential to become traders when nurtured/trained.

2/Turtles didn’t risk their own money which seems the number one obstacle to trading success - a psychological one, it is called fear, while all the Turtles had to fear was not following through on job description provided by R.Dennis and W. Eckhardt, helpful indeed, although still not an easy task. Why only a small minority of the original group remained successful traders, or traders at all, after the experiment was over(many turned school teachers we learn)? In my opinion the conclusive experiment started rather then ended when the group got disbanded.

3/This point is less important than the earlier two - Turtles didn’t develop their methods which is an intellectual challenge, in fact less formidable than the psychological challenge of trading, and also weren’t faced with the question whether or not to adjust their methods when and if markets changed. As far as I know the 20 day breakout they applied with success during the time of the experiment doesn’t work nearly as well as it did (famous L.Raschke, one of J.Schwager’s Market Wizzards, has coined the name “Turtle Soup” for one of her trading setups - fading the 20-day breakout.

In conclusion: narture alone can very often be insufficient to become and remain successful at trading.

2 Stars Good as a reference for Technical Analysis
A interesting book to read, the author obviously did a nice job of collecting all the info.

In term of the trading methology, I am not too impress with it. It is laughable that someone will trade the market without paying attention to current market condition and fundamental at all. May be that’s why Dennis would often loss 30% or more in one month and he often lost 9 trades out of 10. Sounds to me he got into the sucker rally all the time because he did not know and did not care what’s underneath. I bet if he spend more time studying the general market fundamental, he will do better than that.

On the upside, there’s indeed one thing that interested me in this book, and that’s the profolio risk management. Although Dennis is a lazy dude that would not spend time studying the fundamental, but due to his skillful risk management, he managed to make money eventhough he’s wrong 90% of the time, and that’s what I try to learn from this book.

Actaully, try read “How I Made $2,000,000 In The Stock Market” its much more inspiring to me, the author prove at the end that you have to combine fundamental and technical analysis to make big money in the stock market.

5 Stars Very good and still works
It looks like ideas from this book still works. One of the interesting example of similar approach - Alexander Rezviakov in Russia, whose approach very similar to approach in this book. Even ideas like “…looking at the news for decision-making cues was the wrong thing to do.”. Very interesting, that Alexander start his public lectures about a year before this book was published.

Maybe Donchinan’s channels are old-fashioned nowadays, but main idea - turn off TV, focus at the price, catch the trend, use stops and some other - is still is up to date.

4 Stars Another excellent book
Congrats - All the basics are right in front of the reader… The info in this books gives the serious reader a basic structure, and allows them to then build their own personalized methods around a time proven concept.

Eastern Research & Trading

Bill G. / Singapore

5 Stars Good read
Good book. A lot of traders get caught up in the fundamental garbage, especially when they start out. Focusing on the noise just takes your attention off of what really matters - making money. I can’t cant the number of times when a crop report comes out that supports my bias on the market, only to see the market move the opposite direction. The author did a great job of showing a simple system that performs over time. Too often we trade to feed our ego, not to make money. I don’t know about you, but I just want to make money. The easiest way to do it is to follow the method that others are using to make cash. This book outlined the strategy and showed how others are doing it right now. It almost gives you the edge because you don’t have to do the research on what everyone else is doing. This book straightens out the learning curve.

How do the world’s top traders make millions of dollars in the markets - sometimes in a matter of only weeks or even days? That’s precisely the question Jack Schwager was trying to answer when he interviewed 17 superstar money-makers including Richard Dennis, Paul Tudor Jones, Ed Seykota, Marty Schwartz, Tom Baldwin and others. After reading this best-selling book, you’ll know what ingredients enable these top traders to consistently work their financial magic in the markets while so many others walk away losers. One of the top-selling trading books of all-time!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Inspiration for daytraders
I generally only read textbooks about trading. Statistics, technical analysis, calculus etc. However, this very entertaining collection of interviews may be my favorite and most informative read. The stories give re-assurance that an individual can succeed through their own studies, analysis and effort. If you read carefully between the lines, you can figure out how the best in the business are operating and how they are formulating their strategies.

5 Stars Excellent read
Worth the time to learn how expert traders analyze the market. One of many in my collection.

5 Stars Motivating, Exciting, and Insightful
I have traded off and on over the years from futures contracts, options on stocks and futures, and stocks. I have used technical analysis, fundamental, and both. I have been in and out of the market because of losses, gains, losses, and said chuck it, I will buy ETFs and Mutual Funds. But I always come back to the market and tech analysis again.

If you have found that you have a real interest in trading/investing and want to make it a career, not just because of the money potential, but because you like the hunt, analysis, and challenge, get this book.

You will read real life stories of people that lost in the start, or lost it all, and then finally figured out the game (that fits their own style) and made millions. There are many PROs in the book that dish out some very insightful information. I can say it sure is encouraging to hear that these folks at times had a rough start but never gave up. Even if you do not want to buy stocks directly and just want to invest in the mutual funds, this book is really a fascinating look at the pros in this business. These folks in this book are the real pros and not just some analyst writing a recommendation to make a days wage.

4 Stars Overall a good read
I am kind of critical to these books. Probably half of the interviews are worthwhile to read. Some trading styles are enlightening. Last chapter is full of BS though. All in all, a good read!

3 Stars Entertaining
Nutshell review - an entertaining book with lots of insights and ideas from some of the most sucessful market traders. Worth reading.
Stock investing is a relatively recent phenomenon and the inventory of true classics is somewhat slim. When asked, people in the know will always list books by Benjamin Graham, Burton G. You’ll know you’re getting really good advice if they also mention Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lef

KEY BENEFIT: Updated and revised to reflect the most current information, this introduction to futures and options markets is ideal for those with a limited background in mathematics.

KEY TOPICS: Based on Hull’s Options, Futures and Other Derivatives, one of the best-selling books on Wall Street, this book presents an accessible overview of the topic without the use of calculus. Packed with numerical samples and accounts of real-life situations, the Fifth Edition effectively guides readers through the material while providing them with a host of tangible examples.

MARKET: For professionals with a career in futures and options markets, financial engineering and/or risk management.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star No solutions to chapter problems
For a book this expensive, you would think there would be solutions to the chapter problems but, beware, there are NOT. You must shell out another $40 to get the solutions manual. The chapters are well-written but how about the poor students?

5 Stars Excellent book for beginners in financial engineering
I started a course in Financial Engineering last year and this book has given me all the grounding I need.

Pros:

* Very in-depth treatment of derivative basics, e.g. call, puts, swaps, forwards, futures.

* Many, many examples to complement the material.

* Many good practice problems to help further your understanding.

* Covers binomial, Monte Carlo and Black Scholes pricing of options very well

* Industry standard textbook - all the professionals use it.

I can’t think of many negatives for the book. So if you’re a student of finance, go get this book!

5 Stars Great intro
I started not knowing a “put” from a “call,” but I needed to know a fair bit about how financial engineers (coming from a family of PEs, I’m still not used to that term) use math. This has been the introduction I wanted - not the advanced stuff, but enough to help me understand that material.

Methodical pacing leads the reader gradually through the basics, from just what a derivative is on through the brief story of how futures markets work - in short, they abstract buying and selling into buying and selling the right to buy and sell. I tend towards the concrete, so many of these transactions seemed a bit airy to me. Oh, I can follow the reasoning well enough, but I just never saw where the satisfaction of the thing solid and completed comes in. As it turns out, it doesn’t. Once you’ve really got that in the pit of your stomach, then Hull’s presentation follows smoothly.

He gradually derives models of increasing complexity. Diligent reader with a little calculus or a lot of trust will follow along easily. Later chapters draw on more advanced concepts in probabilistic modeling, but present the reader with only the aspects needed for the discussion at hand - a mercy, considering the size of the specialized vocabulary involved in the rest of the explanation.

This book ends when the foundation has been built. More advanced needs must be met with other sources - not a problem with this text, just a matter of its chosen scope. I needed that foundation, however, so I recommend this book to anyone with reasonaable math skills and a need to know the material.

– wiredweird, reviewing the 6th edition

3 Stars Not (quite) a place to start
If you are a total beginner, like I was 6 months ago, then you might want to tear your hair out when reading this book. I found the description of interest rates quite confusing. I would suggest you start with The Wall Street Journal Complete Money and Investing Guidebook (The Wall Street Journal Guidebooks) and then move to All About Derivatives (All About) and Investment Science. From then on it’s quite a good book, but the mathematics is very cavalier (and would you trust someone who tells you that Pi is 3.14162?). Now that I have read a lot of these primers, I actually like Hull’s book and find that his treatment of the Ito calculus, while lightweight is a good place to start before going on to a solid foundation.

I can’t say anything about the numerical methods because it’s not my field yet.

5 Stars The best!
The best introductory/intermediate textbook for students of finance. Not overwhelming to read, but, of course, you still need to know some math.
